Can an organic compound without a chiral carbon atom exhibit optical activity? If yes how is it possible???

yeah they can..eg.allenes,biphenyls and spiranes this is cuz these have high steric hindrance...hence pushed out of plane which results in optical act..

the only criteria for a compound to be optical is to have a non superimposable mirror image...
examples are as written above...

all tht matters 4 optical act is tht mol n mirror img not superimposable...in case of the compounds i mentioned hindrance makes it kind of bent out of plane... C=C=C is an allene assume diff stuff att 2 the 2 terminal crabons...now as it aint planar n not symmetric also it cannot be superimposed wid mirror img..similar 4 others also... rate this if u lik it...

yea i agree...d minimun requirement for optical activity is disymmetry............................a cmpd may or may nt hav chiral carbon, but if it has disymmetry,it will definetely b optically active...............
