This is based on atomic number ranking method.According to this theory,"when atoms of higher atomic number are on the same side of the double bond,the double bond is said to have 'Z' configuration.'Z' stands for the German word "Zusammen" which means "together".When atoms of higher atomic number are on the opposite sides of the double bond it is said to have "E" configuration."E" stands for the german word "Entegegen" which means "opposite".
