The difference in electronegativity between the two atoms that form the molecule helps us identify the polar nature... the diff. in electronegativity should b greater than 2 or 3....

A non-polar molecule has no net dipole. This can be achieved by the molecule having: - only non-polar bonds
- polar bonds arranged symmetrically so that the dipoles cancel out
A polar molecule has a net dipole. This is achieved in the molecule by the molecule being made up of polar bonds arranged unsymmetrically so that the dipoles do not cancel out

for this u must draw the structure of the molecule.....& consider comparative electronegativity of bonded elements....
....as dipole moment is a vector qantity , so dimention ie arrangement of grps is very imp
BeCl2 ,BCl3 , CH4,CCl4,C6H6.....are nonpolar due to there symmetric arrangement.....
CHCl3,CH2Cl2,NH3,NF3....are polar

If the electronegativity difference between two atoms in a molecule(X) >1.7, the molecule is predominantly ionic. if X=1.7,the molecule is 50%covalent and 50%ionic. and if X<1.7,The molecule is predominantly covalent.
