Sodium Ethaoxide will support Sn1 or Sn2?
Engineering Entrance , Medical Entrance , AIPMT , JEE Main , AIIMS , JEE Advanced , Chemistry , Organic Chemistry

 

What will CH3CH2O-Na+ be treated as? If taken just as: CH3CH2O- the reaction will prefer Sn2/ E2 and vice versa...
Please solve this now

it suppeorts Sn1 due to high steric hindrance.

The substrate is secondary. The base is strong, notice the inductive effects of the alkyl groups connected to O--


There is no stabilising factor for the negative charge. Thus the base is strong. If the base is strong, elimination is favoured on the secondary substrate. Thus E2 will occur. (Antiperiplanar conformation of H and the leaving group, Br, support E2)

Vnkt. Swaroop's answer is right. but Swaroop the C on which halogen is attached is secondary. By steric hindrance, you mean the back side attack by tertiary group attached at beta carbon?
