I made this project in XII-
Aim - To detect the presence of caffeine in various tea brands available in market.
Apparatus required -
Test tubes,Flasks and conical flask,Funnel,Bunsen burner,Tripod stand,Wire Gauze,Glass rod,Filter paper.
Chemicals required -
Samples of tea,Calcium Carbonate,Dil. H2SO4,Chloroform (CHCl3) ,Distilled water
Procedure -
1-Take 10g of tea sample.
2-Add 100mL of distilled water in a 400 mL beaker and boil it. Add first sample of tea to it and boil for 10 minutes. Cool and filter the solution.
3-To the filtrate, add 2g of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) and boil the content. Tannic acid gets precipitated as Calcium Tannate. Separate the precipitate of calcium tannate by filtration.
4-Add 1mL of Dil. H2SO4 to the filtrate. Lead gets precipitated as PbSO4.
5-Remove the precipitate by filtration and extract the filtrate with Chloroform (CHCl3) 3-4 times.
6-Combine the CHCl3 extract and remove the solvent by heating on a steam bath.
7-The residue left behind is caffeine.
8-Weigh the caffeine left behind.
Hope it helps you.
