How can we test for alcohol using CERIC AMMONIUM NITRATE?




 


I found this Q in a ROORKEE q paper




 


Both M&B and I L FINAR don't have this

Add alcohol to cerric ammonium nitrate solution. Blood red color will indicate presence of alcohol.

How can we distinguish between primary,secondary and tertiary alcohols using this?

It is NOT used to distinguish between primary,secondary,tertiary alcohols.
It is used to determine the quantity of alcohol(like pH scale).

Pink or light red colour means less alcohol.
Deep red colour means more alcohol.

It is used by the traffic police to determine if the drivers are drunk.
