the density of alkanes increase with increase in molecular mass (van der waals forces).
but they are lighter than water.

wat happens with branching?any exceptions??Does it follow the same trend in other Hydrocarbons?Diffrerence of density in cis-trans????

branching leads to weakening of van der waals force.
but it do not alter density.since d= m/v and on branching v dec. ther4 d inc.

ashish i would like to disagree with you. Actually density decreases slightly with increase in branching
