A functional group is attached to a primary C atom in one compound,the same functional group is attached to a secondary C atom and to a tertiary C atom in another compound.Which type of isomerism is these?

i guess its positional isomerism in this case...hope u got it..cheers!!

never give up in life.keep trying till you succeed.don't forget to rate my answers if u find them to be correct as it will only boost my confidence....

it's a chain isomer.

It's both.There can be many cases for your question so i'm assuming  4 carbons and the functional grp as -OH. Note that minimum four carbons should be there for isomerism according to the given qs.

so the compounds formed are
1)1-butanol
2)1-methyl-1 butanol
3)1-1 dimethyl-1 butanol.

Chain isomerism is when the longest carbon chain is of the same number of carbons, in 1) longest carbon chain is of  4 carbons. In 2) it is 4 and in 3) it is 3 carbons. So 1,2 are chain isomers and 2,3 and 1,3 ae positional.

There is no better feeling in this world than being a winner!

It's not any type of isomerism as the no. of molecules in each of the compounds are diff. that is the emperical formula is diff. so no isomerism is defined for the above.

its position isomerism........suppose  C-C-C-C
                                                                    C

.....this gp has 1degree, 2 degree, 3 degree carbons.......

now consider attachment of functional group...

3-methyl -1-butanol
3methyl -2-butanol
2-methyl-2-butanol

....plz rate d ans

never curse ur conditions....ask urself wt all sincerity...whether u r doing ur best or not?...u wl get the ans n get started.......GOODLUCK Dr. Meenal

If the number of carbon atoms in all the compounds are same,then the answer is POSITION ISOMERISM.

POSITION ISOMERISM :-

"Position isomers are compounds that have the same formula ,carbon skeleton and functional groups which are attached at different postions of the carbon skeleton "
====================================

For example, there are two structural isomers with the molecular formula C3H7Br. In one of them the bromine atom is on the end of the chain, whereas in the other it's attached in the middle.

==========================================================
Another similar example occurs in alcohols such as C4H9OH

Two other isomers of butanol are:

IF U THINK U CAN, U CAN........IF U THINK U CAN'T, U CAN'T.........
