this reagent is used for introducing 2 OH groups on a C=C double bond
i.e. it give di-ol when used on alkenes
note - it gives syn addition

it just oxidises CC double or triple bond (as KMnO4 do). the oxidation is syn type.


it is an oxidisng agent becoz osmium(Os) is in its highest attainable oxidation state
