what is alpha carbon,beta carbon
None

can someone explain what is alpha carbon, beta carbon..........

ch3-co-ch-co-ch3(pentane-2,3-dione)

the middle carbon atom is alpha carbon atom....

The alpha carbon in organic chemistry refers to the first carbon after the carbon that attaches to the functional group

my friend said this

why cant the corner C be alpha they too are attached to functional group??????????

i think they r also alpha carbon atom.....but if u considered this molecule in tautomerism phenomenon then the migration of hydrogen occurs from middle alpha carbon atom coz this leads to a stable molecule due to hydrogen bonding....
i think so this,,,,
if i m wrong plz correct me...

@drritu try to solve his main doubt....
in ur opinion...
why cant the corner C be alpha they too are attached to functional group??????????

all the three of them are alpha carbons
but when the compound stabilises by tautomerism its the middle alpha hydrogen goes to the oxygen atom 2 form the enolic form as it is the most stable compound of all the compounds formed by the migration of the other alpha hydrogens...
and compound is further stabilised by the hydrogen bonding between the hydrogen and the other oxygen atom.....

That's why the central carbon may be considered as the alpha carbon...
bt its nt at all true.. all the three of them are alpha carbons and there are 7 alpha hydrogens....

rate if useful

carbon atom which is directly attached to functional group( either side of functional group) is called alpha and the next carbon is called as beta and next gama and then delta.
