hi
Back-bonding takes place b/w two atoms [already forming bond(s)]:
:one wid extra electrons(lone pair) while the other wid empty orbital ( usually d-orbital)....
It just enhances the strength of the bond b/w the two atoms and make the cmpnd more stable as the electrons are shared in empty orbitals!!
ex: Cl in many cmpnds is involved in b-b
This also helps in the formation of cmpnds like CO...
In the C=O C is still having a scarcity of two electrons but O cant form more bonds as its orbitals are filled.....
In this case O donates its lone pair directly to the C forming a back bond wid it and satisfying the C- scarcity...!!!
the back bonding also takes place b/w some metal and ligands wid the same style where the metals are wid lone pairsand the ligand wid empty orbital..!!
ex: CO - Metal and Cl containing ligand-Metal
