as the name suggests ...polar solvants r polar in nature..hence they dissolve polar compounds and nonpolar solvants r non polar in nature..hence they dissolve non polar compounds

Ans: Polar substance or solvents are those in which netdipole moment is not zero.The polarity of substance depends upon the electronegativity of constituent atoms.Greater is difference bet electronegativity's of atoms greater is polar nature.ex water
While the non polar solvent or substance are those in which the net dipole moment of constituent molecules is nearly zero.Actualy it is not zero.In non polar solvents partialy dissociate.ex CCl4,benzene
