for a molecule to have resonance it must satisfy the following conditions
1.all resonating structures must have same arrangement of atomic nuclei.(this is the basic difference b/w resonance and tautomerism.)
2.the resonating structures must have the same no. of unpaired and paired el. ( though their distribution may differ).
3.the energies of resonating structures must be same or nearly same.( benzoic acid fails in this rule.)
4.all atoms which are part of the delocalisation system must be in same plane or must be nearly planar.
5.while writing resonance structures ,octet rule must not fail (means all atoms should follow octet rule).
hope u got it..............

In writing resonance structures we are only allowed to move electrons
All of the structures must be proper lewis structures
