When NO is conerted to NO- , bond length of N-O bond decreases...

Can anybody explain me why..

How to predict the bond length...

Please explain.

Bond length is inversely proportional to bond order.

Bond order = 1/2(Nb-Na)
Nb=electrons in bonding mol. orbital
Na=electron in anti bonding mol. orbital

In case of NO and NO(-), the extra electron enters the anti bonding mol. orbital and hence the bond order decreases and bond length increases.
