Which of the follwing compound(s) do not undergo canizzaro reaction?
a) CCl3 CHO
b)
p-methyl o,o-di tert butyl benzaldehyde

c) p-oxo N,N dimethyl aniline
d) Ph-CHCl2
Sorry if i ve written the compound name wrong...hope u can understand...
All have aldehyde group except last one

Comments (8)

(a) will not give the Cannizzaro's reaction as the intermediate formed due to attack of OH cleaves to give stable carbanion, which later on cleaves to form the formate.
(b) will also not undergo the reaction as the tetrahedral intermediate formed is highly strained due to steric hinderance ( presence of two bulky groups- t-butyl on ortho carbon).
(c) is not an aldehyde it is a ketone and the alpha carbon atoms in this ketone have hydrogens.
However, (d) may give the reaction as under the reaction conditions it is hydrolysed to benzaldehyde which give the Cannizzaro's reaction.
