Napthalene is stabilised by resonance=61kcal/mole,benzene is stabilised by 36kcal/mole.When aromatic character of one ring of naphthalene is destroyed only 25 kcal of resonance energy is destroyed in next stage 36kcal is to be destroyed.Thats why oxidn. of naphthalne by V2O5 yields pthallic anhydride ie only one ring is oxidised. The large diff. in resonance energies and the presence of more deactivating rings in naphthalene & anthracene is d main reason.
