remember one thing ........strength of the base determines the order of the reaction.......if the base is weak .....it takes some time for the base to attack the nucleophilic site.......meanwhile the substrate dissociates into ions and SN1 reaction takes place .........if the base is strong ,it immediately attacks the nucleophilic site before the substrate dissociates hence SN2 reaction takes place...........

imagine a strong base like a big gunda (gangster), it doesnt wait for some one to make space for it, it will push away the weaker one while taking its place.
