yes. its due to charge transfer of electrons from oxygen to Mn+7 which gives colour

KMn04 has 3d0 4s0 confign...
in 3do the central metal gets so much electron deficient that the ligand transfers all its antibonding electrons to the metal ion...
COMPLETE CHARGE TRANSFER EFFECT...
Here O2- transfers its antibonding electrons...
thus givin a sharp violet coloration to KMn04...
 
No othr xplaination xists 4 this fact...:->

Transition metal compounds normally show colour becoz of electronic transition (crystal field theory) but there are numerous examples with d0 and d10 show colour which is a result of charge transfer from ligand to metal or metal to ligand.
 
KMnO4 is an example of a compound whose colour is the result of charge transfer 1CT) from O2~ to the empty d orbital of the metal ion
