OH of methanol can form H-bonds with water whereas I of iodomethane cannot.

CHI3 is almost non polar. so it is not able to dissolve in water (which is a polar solvent) easily. methanol is polar molecule, so it can dissolve in water very easily. Like Dissolves Like.
