I had this information when new IITs were announced. It was mentioned very clearly that IT BHU will be given IIT Status.
I have so far not found any rule which prohibits for creating more IITs in one state. I think Roorkee was given IIT status in the year 2000 itself when it was under U.P. Therefoer UP having two IIts i.e Kanpur and Roorkee.( I am not very sure abouit it)

The IIT-JEE prospectus nowhere mentions that IT-BHU will be converted to IIT this year. Rumour is that there is some political problem in accepting the proposal pending for the past 3-4 years. The list of 3 new IITs this year does not include IT-BHU.

Hi I am IT BHU student last year i was also on this forum during my JEE Now yes the news is true ITBHU is being converted into an IIT and this process will take less than a year ie before the next session after the administration has been renewed the IIT status will be granted although the funding to IT BHU and financial and administrative autunomy will be similar to any IIT from the coming session ie july 2008 onwards
