we can do it by knowing the hybridisation.but r u sure it is CaC2. BCOZ I M GETTING THE VALUE OF NO. OF HYBRID ORBITALS -VE.

if CaC2 IONIC,THEN IS IT NOT POSSIBLE TO DO IN HYBRIDISATION METHOD?IF WE CAN.THEN HOW?PLZ. REPLY.

chemical bonding is of two types,

ionic and covalent

in covalent bond sharing of electrons takes place, i.e, there will be the overlapping of atomic orbitals to form hybrid orbitals (this is called hybridization)

while in ionic bond transfer of electrons takes place , (there is no overlapping of orbitals, thus no q of hybridisation)
 
For ionic bonds u need to use the coordination number to determine the geometry

Heres the structure of CaC2 
 
 
 (the idea tat C and C are bonded covalently(the triplebond) was given by (c)himanshu.........so the credit goes to him too......)
