Acc. to me the possible reasons is this -
1. all single bonds are sigma bonds
2. Coordinate bonds r formed by donation of electrons , and the overlapping takes place along the axis .

i do think the same .in coordinate bond overlapping of bonds takes place along the axis although one orbital is empty whereas the other has an extra electron .

but i am confused whether teh concept of sigma ,pi bonds can be applied to coordiante bond

Hey !
coordinate bond is sigma bond bcoz of the above two reasons . sigma bonds r formed by overlapping along axis , and so r coordinate bonds .
