The co-ordinate bond is viewed as a single bond.
F.C = no of valence e-s in the netral atom - (no of bond e-s)/2

In this case , N has 5 e- in outer most shell Before bonding.

The no of bond e-s is 8 that by 2 is 4
F.c. =5-4 =1

see....if u have drawn the structure......then i'll tell u how to calculate
FC= [total valence electrons in free atom]- [ total no of lone pairs] - 1/2[no of bonding electrons]

FC = 5-0 - 1/2 [8]
= 5 -4
= 1

Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.

but in arihant's book it's unshared ELECTRONS instead of LONE PAIRS......

that makes it more confusing coz UNSHARED ELEC on N is 1

no, it isnt
there are no free electrons on nitrogen atom
it forms double bond wid one O and single bond wid oder two O's.
