chemisorption takes place through the formation of bonds on the surface of the adsorbent while in physisorption the molecules are held by van der waals forces of attraction .....................enthalpy chages during chemisorption is high while during phsisorption is low ..............chemisorption depends upon the material while physisorption is quite independent

| | Physical adsorption | Chemical adsorption | | 1 | Due to intermolecular van der waals forces | Due to chemical bond formation | | 2 | Depends on nature of gas. easily liquefiable gases r adsorbed more readily. less specific . | More specific than p.a | | 3 | Heat of adsorption is small | It is large | | 4 | Reversible | irreversible | | 5 | Rate increases as pressure increases nd decreases as temp increases | Rate increases with temp nd pressure has no effect . | | 6 | Forms multimolecular layers on adsorbant surface. | Forms unimolecular layer. |
