Why H2 and Clare liberated at Cathode and Anode respectively instead of H2 and O2 The NCERT textbk says"Due to 'overpotential of oxygen' chlorine is released although Oxygen has a lower E value than Chlorine"

What is

Overpotential of Oxygen???

see

in electrolysis of aq NaCl, Cl2 is evolvd at anode bcoz the discharging potential of OH- is greater thn tat of Cl-

so discharging tendency of Cl- is more

O2 will b evovld at anode wen the soln is vry dil.....coz thn the concentration of OH- will b more

Check out EMF series

on the bottom (or top depending on what u refer) are elements like Li n Na
these have VERY HIGH OXIDATION POTENTIALS...
i.e they tend to oxidise easily
na > na + is simple
reverse is not
h > h+ or reverse both has 0 V potential
so if u have to carry out a reaction between
Na + > Na
H + > H
check the potentials.....the second is much easier
same goes for Cl-
hence the products obtained are H2 n O2

conduct the same experiment in MOLTEN NaCl u will get what u expect
