I have not really understood equivalent weight. Especially of a compound. They say that eq wt. of a compound is Mass / n factor, where n factor is total charge on any one element when it breaks up.. But then in reactions when i use this formula i get the wrong answer. And RCM somehows gets the answer and looking at the solution some other equivalent weight has been used! Please help

look wight of a substance that will combine with or replace one mole of hydrogen or one half mole of oxygen ..........the equivalent weight is equal to the the atomic weightb divided by valence...............
