What is "Gold Number"???
And What does reciprocal of gold number indicates???
...... I think it is from surface chemistry...... can anyone answer it???

GOLD NO. IS DEFINED AS
NO. OF MILLIGRAMS OF LYOPHOBIC SALTS ADDED TO 10ml OF GOLD SALT TO PREVENT THE PRECIPITATION BY ADDITION OF 1ml 10% NaCl SOLUTION.
SMALLER THE GOLD NO. MORE WILL BE THE PROTECTIVE ACTION OF THE LYOPHOBIC SOL...
eg:
0.25GRAM OF STARCH IS ADDED TO 100ML OF GOLD SOLUTION+1ml OF 10% NaCl.FIND THE GOLD NO.
Ans: FOR 100 ml 0.25 GM IS ADDED
THUS FOR 10ml 0.025 GM SHALL BE ADDED
HENCE GOLD NO IS 25....
PLEASE RATE THIS REPLY IF U FOUND THIS INFORMATIVE...

Gold Number
It is the number of milligrams of the protective colloid which just prevent coagulation of 10ml of standard gold sol when 1 ml of 10% solution of sodium chloride is added to it.
Different lyophilic sols have different gold numbers. Smaller the gold number of the protective colloid, greater is the protective power of the lyophilic sol. The gold numbers of a few colloids are listed below.
