most difficult problem of redox reactions........!

Engineering Entrance , Medical Entrance , AIPMT , JEE Main , AIIMS , JEE Advanced , Chemistry , Physical Chemistry

this is one of the hardest redox equation. so, if you can do this , you can do any kind of problem in chemistry.

the problem is

CuSCN+KIO3+HCl === CuSO4+KCl+HCN+ICI+H2O

(BALANCING REDOX EQUATION)

ACID OR BASES IT'S DOES NOT MATTER

4 CuSCN + 10 HCl + 7 KIO3 = 4 CuSO4 + 7 ICl + 4 KCN + 5 H2O + 3 KCl

are you absolutely sure of the formula & zero charge on CuSCN... if so, the Cu+1 ---> Cu+2 & 1 electron lost======================SCN- half reaction is given as #13 @http://books.google.com/books?id=SNzXKVC?SCN- --> SO4-2 & HCN- & 6 electrons lostplus the: Cu+1 ---> Cu+2 & 1 electron lostgives:so CuSCN --> CuSO4 & HCN & 7 electrons lost======================================?KIO3 & 4 e- taken --> I+1 (that's the iodine in ICl)=====================the ratio to balance the electrons should be 4:7....================4CuSCN --> 4CuSO4 & 4HCN 7KIO3 --> 7KCl & 7ICl=======================4CuSCN & 7KIO3 & HCl --> 4CuSO4 &7KCl & 4HCN & 7 ICl & H2Obalance the Cl's & the H+'s4CuSCN & 7KIO3 & 14 HCl --> 4CuSO4 & 7KCl & 4HCN & 7 ICl & 5 H2Oshould be done
