It helps in converting H2 to water which stays inside the cell as it is an dilutes the stuff like NH4Cl etc.
MnO2 gets converted to MnO(OH)

it has an important role in the cell as a Depolariser
It helps to convertthe evolved H2 during the cell reaction to water which stays inside the cell . now , this water acts as a diluter for the electrolyte NH4Cl .
