the answer should be XY
it is XY3 when Y atoms occupy the face centres not the centre of the cube

Hey, If you meant the face.. contribution of x =(1/8)*8 contribution of eac Y=1/2 there are 6 atoms(ratio) in a cubic lattice => 6*1/2=3 Therefore, The compound...

X atoms r pesent at 8 corners of the cube therefore no. of atoma X in unit cell=1/8*8=1 Y atoms are at face centres of the 6 faces of the cube No of atoms of Y in unit cell=1/2*6=3 Hence the formula of compound is XY3......

Ashish is right.... I think Varshini shud check the statement of the ques... 'Y ATOMS OCCUPY THE CENTRES OF EACH OF THE CUBES." some prob in this sentence....
