Does electronegativity or electropositivity of a substance have any significance in displacement or substitution reactions? Please explain in detail considering the cases of both metals and non metals.

in a substitution rxn.... a more electropositive substance displaces the ion of lower electro positivity frm the compound....

ie... 2NaCl + MgSO4 --> Na2SO4 + MgCl2

can you explain in detail,
Na2SO4+MgCl2
 
In the above reaction, does Na replace Mg to form NaCl and MgSO4,  why ,if not
