C(s) + 1/2 O2(g) ------> CO(g) ;        Delta rH0 = -110KJ
C(s) + H2O (g) -------> CO(g) + H2 (g) ; Delta rH0 = 132 KJ

Composition of steam and O2 when it passed over coke keeping temperature 1273K will be-

A-1:2
B-5:3
C-4:5
D-1:1

Please tell the answer along with explanation.

for the first reaction
ds is negative therefore

dG=-110+ dS * 1273
dS is negative so the above expression
here G is sure to be positive because of the high temperature
hence i dont think the reaction will occur
same goes for the second reaction also
so the ratio should be 1:1

i think the answer is 5:3
bcoz for the first reaction entropy is -ve, so it is spontaneous, so oxygen is readily used
where as for the second reaction entropy is +ve so it is not readily used so it will remain in more amount

@suns_uday
-ve entropy does not imply that the reaction is spontaneous
it is the change in gibbs energy that indicates whether or not a reaction is spontaneous

uday is correct.
The ans is 5:3.
But please explain. I cudn't understand the reason U hav given in ur last post.

sorry man
made a blunder
in the first reaction there is i mol of gas in the product
and half a mol of gas in the reactant side
so dS is +ve
so dG is sure to be negative and the reaction occurs
for the second reaction also dS is positive
but there dH is +ve
so the probability that dG is negative is lesser than the previous case
so the second reaction occurs to a lesser extent than the first
so the amount of steam must be greater than amount of oxygen
hence 5:3

Thanx madman,
can u plz explain me why in the first reaction dS>0?

in the first reaction dH is +ve and T is also +ve and dS=dH/T
so dS=-ve /+ve =-ve

greater the amount of gas greater the entropy
as entropy is the amount of disorderness of a system
there is 1 mol of gas in the product but only half a mol in the reactant side
so the product side has greater amount of disorderness
hence dS is +ve
