According to Thomson the amt of deviation of the cathode ray particles from their path in the presence of elec and mag field depend on :
 1.  (   )The magnitude of the negative charge on the particle.
 2.   ( 1/  )    Mass of the particle .

THe dates support that ions and other cahrged species were not taken into consideration during the expt . so they speaking of only electrons and the nucleus.
SO THE FIRST STATEMENT SAYS THAT GREATER THE NEGATIVE CHARGE(MORE THE Z) , MORE THE DEVIATION, WHEREAS THE SECOND STATEMENT SAYS THAT LIGHTER THE PARTICLE , MORE THE DEVIATION.
BUT BOTH THE STATEMENTS CONTRADICT EACH OTHER. PLS ELUCIDATE
THANK YOU

how do they contradict? it is charge and mass, which are independent.
