general rule 4 calculating Oxidation No. of elements:
since it is laborious to draw the structure of all molecules n dn find the ON of the concerned element, some genral rulz r dere 2 find out the oxidation no..

1. ON of an elemnet in the free state or uncombined state is 0.
ex ON of O in O2, Cl in Cl2 is zero.

2. ON of an atom, in a monoatomic ion, is equal to the number of Positive or negative charges on the ion. ex: ON of Al atom in Al3+ and Cl in Cl- ion is +3 n -1 respectively

3. the sum of the oxidation numbers of all the atoms,, in a given molecule , is zero. this sum is = to the sum of ON of the individual, each multiplied by the no of the atoms present in the molecule.
Ex: in Na2SO4 molecule, the sum of ON =2 into (+1) + 1 into (+6) + 4 into (-2) = 2+6-8 = 0

4. in plyatomic ions, the algebric sum of ON of all the constituent atoms is = to the no. of positive or negative charges on the polyatomic ion.
Ex: in Cr2O7(2-) ion, the sum namely 2 into (+6) + 7 into (-2) is equl to -2 which is the charge on the ion...

5. in compounds containing ions or radicals.. it is more convinient to use the ON of the ions or radicals, rather than to assign the ON to the individaul atoms...
Ex: ON of Cl atom iin both the compounds, namely NOCl and CH3Cl is -1, since ON of NO+ and CH2+ groups is +1. similaryly ON of Fe in sodium nitroprusside, Na2[Fe(CN)5(NO)] is +2, since ON of CN- and NO+ groups are -1 and +1 respectively.

6. ON of a non-metal is negative in its compound with metals or with H,
Ex: ON of N in the both the molecules Ca3N2 and NH3 is -3

7. ON of the metls of groups 1A and group 2A is alwyz +1 and +2 respectively...

8. the ON of an atom is a variable quantity, since it may be differnet in different compounds. the fact is evident from the below given xmpls:

a) the ON of H atom is :
zero in free H atom or H2 molecuele
b) +1 in cmpounds like H2O2,NH2OH, NH3, HX, PH3, HN3, N H4-, H2SO4, SiH4, CH4, C2H6, C3H8 etc .

c) -1 in metallic hydrides ex CaH2, NaH, LiAlH4 etc..

be careful in detecting the ions....they may make ur ansr wrong...
if ya need more examplz or smdn more dn nudge me...i'm tired typing nw...hope dis helps ya...

U forgot the basic thing.
Dont get confused in Oxi no.(O.N.) and Oxi State(O.S.)

O.N.=|O.S.|
O.S. can be +ve,-ve,fraction,zero. It is represented by simple numbers like 1,2,-3 etc.

BUT O.N. CANNOT be -ve,fraction,zero. It is ALWAYS represented by Roman Numerals like I,II,III etc.

The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.

It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.

Can ne1 tell me how to find oxidation state of all oxygens in CrO5?

u see akhil dere CrO5 forms a butterfly structure...srry canno make it here... if ya find the OS directly u'll get +10 which's impossible...
so itz necessary that dere must be an peroxide bond dere...
make one...nw OS of Cr is +8 still not possible....nw form anodr...
u'll get the OS of Cr as +6...nw...
so the OS of 4 oxygen's is -1 each and of the remaining one is -2....which forms a double bond with the Cr atom....the odr 4 oxygenz form a single bond with Cr and single bondz with each odr...ie one with each odr...hope ya get it nw...
