volumetric analysis
None

31.65 ml of 0.165 M Ba(OH)2   requires 25 ml of citric acid H3C6H5O
for almost complete neutralisation. Find the concentration of citric acid.
hey, i applied m1v1=m2v2 but still not getin the ans
plzzzz help

the structure of citric acid is attached below, as clear frm figure its basiscity is 4, thrfore
4 X 25 X M = 2X 31.65 X 0.165
frm here u'll get the value of M....

i think i can explain
the formula is
m1v1/n1=m2v2/n2
where n1&n2 are no of moles in equation
and not m1v1=m2v2
as told by magiclko basicity of citric acid is 4
therefore 1/2 mole is required to neutralise imle of Ba(OH)2
31.65x0.1645/1=25xM/0.5
we get 0.1044M
which should be the correct ans
i you find my solution correct plz plz rate me.if not plz point out the mistake

we cant do m1v1=m2v2, cuz the law of equivalence statets that no of equivalents of reactants consumed in a rxn= no of equivalents of products formed in the rxn....

Apply N1V1 = N2V2

Basicity of citric acid is 4.
Acidity of Ba(OH)2 is 2.

Hence
(4)(25)(M) = (2)(31.65)(0.165)

M = .104445

but i have found the correct ans with m1v1/n1=m2v2/n2
which means my method is correct too .isnt it???

Look avik1,

WE are using n1v1 = n2v2 because for neutralization, the number of milliequivalents of acid and base are equal. in the above equation, n1*v1 is equal to the number milliequivents.

m1v1 is equal to the number of moles. And it is not necessary that number of moles of acid and base should be equal !!!

Hope you have got it !!!

m1v1 is equal to no of moles, but isnt m1v1/n1 equal to no of equivalents
