Consider the bond between carbon monooxide and a metal in a metal carbonyl.

In such a bond electron pairs is donated by CO to metal forming a cordinate bond. But along with this the metal also donates its electron back to carbon of carbon mono-oxide. Such donation of electron from metal to carbon is called back bonding.
