well i am not sure...but i guess as we go down the group the vander waals forces increses due to larger surface area and hiigher molecular weight...so fluorine and chlorine are gases while bromine is gas and iodine is a solid...

ya i will tell you ................. in bromine u have instantaneous dipole induced dipole forces acting ,so at an instant at one end of the moluclule the elctron cloud density is slightly higher than the other half of it this is an induced dipole and this induced dipole generates a temoporary shift in elctron clouds of neighbouring br molecules. now similarly in iodine no of instantaneous dipoles generated is far higher compared to br . im not sure about the reason for this phenomena but i feel that in case of iodine due a larger size it is easier to distort the electron cloud than in case of bromine due to reduced size .

well the reason of van der waals force is right and i m quite sure abt it.......
but abt X4's explanation........we need an expert advice.....

down the group vanderwaals forces increase. therefore bromine exist in liq. state &iodine in solid state

i think the complete question must be:
why is bromine liquid and iodine solid at room temp///
though f and cl r gases...
i also feel the same reason, that as size increase vanderwall.s forces increases going down a group,,,,,
thus br is liquid and iodine exist as solid at room templ...... i feel the complete question must be:

@ rockey , mukulss vanderwaals forces are not enough to bring about a change in state u need stronger inyteractions involving charges like the one i suggested . im sure about it happening but cant give u a 100% sure reason 4 the phenomena but stil i gave it an attempt
