area is vector, the direction is perpendicular to surface , for curved surface, its outward like this )-> and we hve a choice for plane surfaces....

Dont u remember , You do the dot product of area with Electric field in Gauss' law ?????????

Only a vector can b dot - ed with another !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Area is a scalar quantity but in some problems,it is treat as vector...area vector representing an area element of closed surface enclosing a volume..,,such that area vector is directed along Normal pointing outwards from closed surface...

area is a vector directed perpendicularly along the surface.in simple algebraic calculations only its magnitude is considered.
