Diencephalon = midbrain + pons varolii + medulla oblongata. Diencephalon is a part of forebrain and it is not included in brain stem.

Brain stem includes mid brain and hind brain but diencephalon means thalamus + hypothalamus. which are parts of fore brain

brain stem doesnt include diencephalon..
it is a collective nam given to mesencephalon,pons and medulla.
