on exposure to highradiations...the nhighly penetrating particlesd of radiation tend to delete one or more bases leading to point mutation or mutation @ a large scale...

when a cell is exposed to radiations, many things happen.. like... radiations have energy in them ( hv = planck's constant multiplied by frequency) .. this energy is sufficient to break some bonds... and make other bonds.. eg. thymine thymine double bonds... i.e if A and T are paired and along with T the next or preceeding base is also T, then sufficient energy may break A=T bond and make T=T bond which is a type of mutation..
