alpha taxonomy---------------
Naming and describing species
- alpha taxonomy begs the fundamental question "what is a species"
- Taxonomists distinguish species based on unique morphological or biochemical characters - type specimen, type locality
- Names designated based on International Code of Zoological Nomenclature
Beta Taxonomy -- Hierarchy
- Individuals
- Populations
- Species - fundamental unit of classification schemes
- Genus
- Family
- Order
- Class
- Phylum
- Kingdom
Taxonomic names can, and do reflect "natural", i.e. monophyletic groups of organisms; however hierarchical system can be somewhat arbitrary

alpha taxonomy : the level of taxonomy concerned with the characterisation and naming of species.
beta taxonomy : the level of taxonomy concerned with the arranging of species into a natural system of higher and lower taxa "in beta taxonomy relationships are worked out more carefully on the species level and on that of the higher categories; emphasis is placed on a sound classification"
