complex mechanism.. apoptosis can take place only if a cell has mitochondria and DNA... RBC is devoid of both... it helps in that way... i'd rather not post d whole pathway of apoptosis.. some salient features are dat cytochrome c present in mitochondria is one of d mediators and d effectors are usually DNA-ases and other nuclear acting enzymes... instead, its d physical, thermal, or osmotic stress or other factors which causes Calcium influx and activases another group of proteases which cause haemolysis..

I respect your answer but i think i didn't quite make clear what i meant to ask... it's a simple question... why are RBCs considered living and platelets dead when both basically are of same structure [protoplasm covered with P.M], with platelets being a little closer to a salient cell (at least IMO) - because it has organelles ?
