How to Create Good Study Habits for Exams

Taking exams can be a time for stress and anxiety if you have not studied during the year, you will find yourself cramming for each test and studying late into the night. With a little time management during the school year, you not only minimize stress at exam time, but maximize productivity and results!

         Steps

  1. Buy an extra notebook for each subject at the beginning of the year so that as you finish a chapter in class, you immediately write notes and summaries in that book. The classwork will still be fresh in your mind so at exam time you merely have to read your notes instead of complete chapters.
  2. Buy a set of coloured cue cards. As soon as you return home from school write down the key points you learned from each lesson onto a cue card. This helps your mind to retain the day's important facts. On the weekends look over the cue cards. Get your parents or friends to quiz you on them.
  3. Learn how to make mind maps and other memory aids. Mind maps are graphical illustrations of a subject and a great memory tool to use, especially during exams.
  4. As soon as you finish a topic take out a book from the library and read more information about the subject. Take notes to refer back to them before and at test time.
  5. Don't do rough drafts for essays. Just do the good copy straight away, but thoroughly as well. In an exam situation you won't have time to write out a whole draft copy, so practise writing out good copies straight away.
  6. Make a timetable for exam days by marking the dates on a calendar, so you can be prepared by the time the test comes around.
  7. Make a list of your classes and the topics covered in class. As you study a topic, mark it in a way that is meaningful to you, to remind you which topics have already been studied.
  8. Set aside a study time each day when you are not too tired, or too hungry. If you are going to study for a long time, remember to take a break in between.
  9. Set up a study group. Study groups share notes, thoughts and ideas or how to solve or understand a particular problem. Be sure to honor the class rules on what work may or may not be done in groups.
  10. Plan out 'trial' exams for yourself. All you have to do is redo one of your past tests or quizzes within a time limit. Get into the exam mode by clearing your workdesk of everything except your paper and pen.
  11. Get enough sleep at night. It's harder to concentrate when you got less than six hours of sleep the night before.
  12. When choosing individual subjects to study, start with the least enjoyable or difficult subject. Master it, and you'll end up loving it, (seriously). At the very least, you won't have to worry about putting it off until it's too late because you don't like it

         Tips

  • Don't panic on test day. The night before the exam, and the morning of the exam, read through your notes a few times, then put them away.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast that day, so you feel energized, but don't eat so much that you feel full.
  • You get nothing out of studying only at the last minute. Let's just say, if you haven't began studying 4 days prior to the exam, you are finished.
  • If you suffer from exam stress then take a calming antidote, perhaps an herbal tea. Just don't overdose because it'll make you drowsy.
  • Don't stress out, it makes your mind work slower.
  • Have a balance in life, exams are simply a quick and lazy way to assess people. Don't panic, just study.
  • Develop a positive attitude towards exams. If you are well prepared you'll walk into the exam room thinking "WOW! I can't wait to prove myself to these examiners, I'm gonna whizz this test, just to show them." Negative attitude: " Oooh, I'm so nervous. I hate exams; what's the point? I really don't feel up to this."
  • Ever heard this? "Good luck with your exam!" This is false hope, you shouldn't need a pint of luck to help you succeed, and if you DO need good luck, then you obviously haven't prepared enough.
  • While some can be, most exams aren't really this big. Exams are really just large quizzes with a time limit. No big deal.

         Warnings

  • If you have not prepared yourself for the test, during the term, and before the test, do not expect a high mark!
  • Too much study can be as bad as not enough study because the mind shuts down when too much information is crammed into it.
  • Mind blanks are possibly the most frightening things to occur in an exam. They can happen in any subject, but you can overcome them. The only way to overcome mind blanks is to relax the brain from its hysterical state. In the exam room, close your eyes, breathe in for 5 seconds and let it release through the mouth automatically. Repeat this until you can feel the facts crawling back into your memory.

How to Work and Study at the Same Time

Students who work and study seem to enjoy the best of everything. They get their education and at the same time are able to keep their jobs and get a paycheck. However, it isn't as easy as it sounds and studying at the same time as working is probably one of the hardest things you'll ever do in life. Here are some tips to help you.

         Steps

  1. Have good time management. Set up a daily or weekly plan for yourself and ensure that you set aside time for your studies daily. Vary the study times to fit in with other commitments such as family, sports etc. Be aware, and accept, that your weekends are likely to be eaten into by at least some regular study. Depending on your commitments and need for sleep, early Saturday or Sunday mornings can be a good choice to allow you free time later on both days for family, religious observation, sport, friends, other activities etc.
  2. Get yourself motivated by staying in contact with your classmates. Use the e-mail to share ideas and brainstorm responses to assignments. When studying and working, it can be easy to lose motivation without constant student contact, so make the most of technology to "cybermeet". Try to catch up before or after classes occasionally to put faces to the names.
  3. Set goals and reward yourself when you attain them - this is a great self-motivating habit. One great goal is time off from studying!
  4. Set up a quiet place for study away from home life distractions, such as the television, phone calls or other family members. Always keep your textbooks, notes, computer etc., in this one place for easy access and retrieval when needed. It saves worrying where things are after a long day at the office, store or workshop when you're feeling tired!
  5. Make room for play. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and Jill a dull girl. Play rejuvenates our soul and gives us greater purpose in life. Get out there and enjoy yourself; continue a hobby, go hiking, see a movie, spend an afternoon lying with the kids playing Lego martians on the floor. These are moments as precious as anything and while you are playing, your mind is resting but subconsciously computing the study you've learned and is also rejuvenating your working self. Always put down recreation time in your timetable.
  6. Enjoy the crossover between work and study. Full-time students may appear enviable to you but they are missing out on the key ingredient that is pushing you - work experience. Already working provides added value to your study, by providing real-life insights and examples that can help you better understand your studies. Even if your work and studies are completely unrelated, work is still providing you with the skills of prioritizing, managing, balancing tasks, time-management, dealing with colleagues and customers etc. All of this is invaluable when compared to the inexperience of a full-time student.

         Tips

  • Ask your family and friends to be understanding; you have taken on a lot for the duration of the studies and they may not see much of you at times, such as when you have assignments due or examinations to study for.
  • If you have to miss classes because of work, see your professor to make arrangements to catch up on the missed work, lecture etc. Don't assume the professor will understand at exam time - be upfront from the start of the course.

         Warnings

  • Make sure you choose only an accredited school, university or other learning institution.
  • Don't let your work slip. If you are finding the study is taking so much effort that it is affecting your work, you need to make changes such as fewer courses or negotiating time off work.

How to Concentrate on Studies

One of the most terrifying things on Earth is the period of time when one has to concentrate on nothing but that open textbook. How can you concentrate in a perfect way that won't affect your revision?

     Steps

  1. Take out a piece of rough paper and list the rows from 1-10. Then, before you hit the books, brainstorm 10 'pros' on why you should concentrate. Don't even think about the 'cons', because you'll never come up with the 'pros' if you think about the 'cons'.
  2. Get everything you need for your revision. A cup of coffee? Candy? Your teddy bear? Put them within reach so you won't be strolling around the house, and then being distracted by that cartoon showing on TV.
  3. Make a timetable. You can't really concentrate if you read, read, and read again for 24 hours straight. The best thing is 30-60 minute periods with 5-10 minute breaks in between.
  4. Prepare a full set of rough paper, note sheets, stationery and files. Also, have your books and some reference titles nearby. Don't hop up in the middle of revision to get anything.
  5. If you can't seem to get yourslef to study, think about what you'll do when you grow up, do you want to get a good job as a engineer or work in a dairy? and revise alot on your questions and buy books that help and are fun.

       Tips

  • have a bit of food with you. ortry to beat your friend and study with them. its alot of fun.

       Things You'll Need

  • Ribbon
  • Papers, files, stationery
  • Everything you need for revision.
A bottle of water or juice.
