Employability skills among engineering students are very low due the present grading system in higher education and low level marks to enter professional institution, said Dr E Balagurusamy, member - education, state planning commission, Government of Tamil Nadu.
Speaking at the inauguration of 'ICTACT Bridge', an event for employability skills conducted by the ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu in association with Nasscom in Madurai on Thursday, Balaguruswamy asked, "How can bad quality students, bad quality teachers and bad quality institutions produce students of employable status?"
Over 50% of the engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu could only be deemed as poor, he said.
Out of the total output, only 20% were found to be employable according to industries that employed them, Balaguruswamy said.

This is one of the much-awaited fests in the city. Rendezvous 2011, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi’s annual fest, will witness a scale much grander than previous years. The fest, which will be flagged off on October 21 at 5pm, will come to a close on Monday. “We are spending roughly R30-R35 lakh this year on the fest and are expecting large-scale participation from colleges within and outside Delhi,” said Shashi Mathur, dean of students, IIT-Delhi.
Colleges from across Delhi University and other IITs from across India are expected to participate in the event. “About 600 students from outside Delhi are expected, along with an equal number from within Delhi and NCR. There will be group dances, rock music competitions and a professional night that the students will participate in,” added Mathur.
This year, the IIT has also collaborated with several embassies for renowned musicians from the respective countries to come and participate at ‘Rendezvous.’ “There is a Swedish music band which is going to participate. There will also be several performances by French and Mexican musicians, including a classical music recital by Shubha Mudgal,” said Mathur.

IIT aspirants will have to score a minimum required percentage in each subject in their entrance tests which will help them beat tension, the Joint Admission Board of the premier institutes said.
From 2012 candidates must score "at least 10 per cent in each subject and 35 per cent in aggregate in order to be in the common rank list", said Prof G B Reddy of IIT-Delhi.
Till last year, the averages were decided on performance from paper to paper and through cut-offs based on a complex process.
"We felt that the system created a lot of tension in the minds of students about the percentage they need to score. Therefore, to put an end to this, we have declared the minimum percentage they need to score," he said.
This will help them get relieve of the tension and maximise their scores to secure a good rank in the entrance," he added.
Admission to undergraduate courses in the 15 IITs is done through a Common entrance test known as Joint Entrance Examination (for short IIT-JEE) conducted by the board.
The decision to fix the minimum percentage was taken at the joint admission board meeting here yesterday. The board is the nodal agency for conducting the exams across the country.
The board decided to provide relaxation the percentages in case of OBC candidates and SC and ST students.
"Candidates of OBC category must score at least 9 per cent in each subject and 31.5 per cent in aggregate to be in the OBC rank list," said a statement issued by IIT-Delhi.
Likewise, candidates of SC and ST categories must score at least 5 per cent in each subject and 17.5 per cent in aggregate to be in their respective rank lists.
"The new policy measure announced is a good decision for selecting the right kind of candidates," said director of FIIT-JEE C V Kalyan Kumar, adding it would mostly help candidates who are serious about cracking the IIT test and holding a good rank.

For the first time ever, students appearing for the Indian Institute of Technology- Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) will know exactly how much they need to score to make it to the rank list. In a decision taken by the IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB) on Tuesday, students will be required to score at least 10% marks in three science subjects — physics, chemistry and mathematics—in addition to scoring 35% marks overall to be in the common rank list. Separate rank lists will be prepared for OBC, SC and ST categories. Candidates of OBC category need to score at least 9% in each subject and 31.5% in aggregate in order to be in the OBC rank list, while those in SC and ST categories must score at least 5% in each subject and 17.5% in aggregate. For the physically disabled, the cut-off subject wise is 5% and 17.5% aggregate. Earlier, the cut-offs were decided only after the papers were checked. An average score of each paper was worked out and that became the cut-off for each subject. “The move has been made to take pressure off of students. Students keep fretting about the section that is the toughest, wasting his/her time in the process. The new policy will enable students to focus on their strengths after they are sure to have cracked questions worth 10% marks,” said GK Reddy, chairperson of the JAB.

BlackBerry, which is considered to be the phone of the businessmen and professionals, seems to have set its eyes on the youth.
While launching models to attract them, the Canadian company Research In Motion has begun an initiative to keep the youth engaged in developing apps (applications) for the BlackBerry community across the world.
The company has decided to tap the engineering students in India to strengthen the developer ecosystem. “We have already 2,000 applications specially developed for Indian market by local developers. There are over 26,000 developers in India,” Ms Annie Mathew, Head (Alliances and Developer Relations) of RIM India, said.
Addressing a press conference, she said the company had launched a pilot in Tamil Nadu where in engineering students from 10 universities were invited to take part in the BlackBerry Summit. “They will be given relevant tools to develop Apps. The number of students taking the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination from Mysore is increasing gradually. As the majority of colleges don't conduct special training classes to crack the test, students struggle for proper guidance. Also, there are very few coaching centres in Mysore. | Shankar Prasad, head of a noted coaching centre here, said students lack awareness about the test. "Eight years ago, only 45 students joined our centre but for the past two years, 120 students have enrolled," he said.
Mathematics lecturer and head of another tutorial Sanjay M S says, "Our centre was conducting training classes for IIT-JEE but the centre stopped classes two years ago because every year only around 5-7 students joined." Interestingly, this year, the trend changed and more than 15 students came to this centre.
To create awareness about IIT, every college and coaching centre should organize a free career guidance programme every year at the beginning of the academic year, Sanjay said. Learners Pre-University College, a new institution which started this year, conducts coaching classes for its pilot batch, college coordinator Mahadevswamy M D said. The college is training six students interested in taking the exam. "Recently, 10 students of other colleges requested us to conduct training classes," he said.
Ashok Kumar C K, principal, Sharda Vilas PU College, said the college is training students for the CET. "Colleges can organize special classes for the IIT test if the number of aspirants increases in every college; classes cannot be conducted only for a few aspirants since it requires expert teaching faculties," he said.
A chemistry lecturer attached to a private college told TOI on condition of anonymity that many students don't take up IIT entrance exams as coaching centres charge around Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 per year for training. "Not everyone can afford that kind money,' he said.
Manoj Chandra, a second PU student undergoing coaching for the past four years, says PUC exams are very crucial. If colleges conduct coaching classes for IIT entrance exams, students who travel to tutorials far from respective residences can save a lot of time. He said some of his friends moved to Bangalore after Class 10 because there are very few coaching centres in Mysore.
H S Subramanyam, retired Physics lecturer and currently a tutor in a coaching centre says India is famous for IIT graduates as they are in top positions in many multinational companies but only a few enlightened parents encourage their children to take up the entrance exam.

Educationists, technocrats, principals of engineering colleges in the State, and chairman of the Centre of Institution of Engineers, Palakkad, in a joint letter to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, have urged him to set up the promised Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the Kanjikode industrial area of the district.
The letter, released here on Tuesday, says that Palakkad is the only district in the entire Malabar region which does not have a central institution or a university. All other districts including Wayanad and Kasaragod have one or two such institutions.
“Palakkad has sufficient land and other infrastructure facilities to accommodate a premier national institution amidst big industrial establishments like Indian Telephone Industries, Instrumentation Limited, Fluid Control Research Institute, BEML, Malabar Cements Limited, and the railway coach factory being started soon. It is also well connected by air, road, and railways,” the letter says.
It says that consultancy is a major technical activity of an IIT. Palakkad being an industrial hub of Kerala, a research institution in its vicinity will provide great opportunities to its industrial development. An IIT, when developed into a full-fledged institution, will directly employ 500 highly qualified faculty members from different academic disciplines in technology and science and an equal number of supporting and administrative staff. Over 5,000 students from India and abroad will be studying on the campus.
The letter was signed by the Principals Chandrasekhara Pillai of NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad; Vijayakumar of Government Engineering College, Thrissur; C.K. Krishnan of SNG College of Engineering, Kollenchery; K.K. Babu of Engineering College, Thrissur; and M.K. Vikaraman of Al Ameen College of Engineering; former principals of NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad, such as Mohanachandra Panicker, V. Balakrishna Panicker, and C. Somasekharan; and Vincent Alappat, former chief engineer and chairman of The Institution of Engineers (India), Palakkad local centre.
