see,due to the thin sheet,the rays tht were giving central maxima at the original position,shall now do so at a pt above/below it depending on the position of the covered slit.Thus we may say tht the central maxima has "SHIFTED" up.....then we know how much it has shifted so we use "fringe width"( beta) as a counting unit for that distance and say,"it has shifted up 5 fringe widths..."..

Pls note we cannot notice the shift by observation!!...it shall appear the same to us!

U can apply in all IITs,and most other colleges including NITs..u can check this fact at the aieee website Appendix 8 and the NIOS Prospectus 2008.....
