Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal on Friday said the pattern of Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Exam IIT-JEE, 2013, was being changed so that students do not get away from school scholastic system.

According to the new scheme being finalized, 40 per cent marks will be based on the school board exam results. According to Kapil shibal there will be two exams for IIT-JEE — the Main Exam, which will quiz students on their knowledge of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and the Advanced Exam to assess the depth of learning of a candidate.

As requested by the IITs, we are not changing the name of the examination. We will continue to call it theJoint Entrance Exam, shibal added

A task force headed by IIT-Kanpur Director Professor S G Dhande has been formed to look into the modalities of setting up the IIT-JEE scheme. The task force will have to ensure that states coordinate the release of Class XII exam results and also work out a system to equate the Board marks on a 40-point scale.

      According to Kapil Sibal  the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology of the country will prepare questions papers for the ISEET 2013 entrance exam. This is the first time when the government has decided to hold a common entrance test for all IITs, NITs of the country rather than conducting individual tests for them. Central Board of Secondary Education will take care of management and also conduct the entrance test.

 

 

HRD Ministry want to replace the existing exam like AIEEE and IIT-JEE by ISEET. Both the exams are conducted by CBSE for engineering college admission. JEE exam is conducted by IITs for UG and Integrated PG engineering courses for admission in IITs only. This aspiring exam is going to replace all state level entrance exams too for engineering courses.

 

The ISEET 2013 Indian Science Engineering Eligibility Test 
ISEET will have two parts
 Main and Advance
 Each test is of three hours duration. Both tests will be given on the same day between 10 am and 5 pm. ISEET 2013 will be held in either March or April.

 

1) Structure of ISEET Main Exam This exam will be in objective multiple choice type modes. The exam will test candidates comprehension, critical thinking and logical reasoning.
2) Structure of ISEET Advance Test: This will test candidates problem solving ability in basic science subjects. The performance of the candidate in two tests together will indicate his scholastic level and aptitude for science and engineering programmers.

 

 

Some states are not happy with this change and not willing to accept this exam. They said that states conduct the exam in regional language, but this ISEET exam will be held only in Hindi or in English. This will create problem for those students who do not know both the languages. The States of Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Odessa, Pondicherry and West Bengal asked for some more time to study the proposal in detail. However, the ministry wants to reach up to some conclusion over this proposal within two months.

General Principles for Enhancing Memory and Learning

A.Understanding and Remembering Students need to be taught the relationship and differences between understanding and remembering. That is, they need to know that simply sitting in class and understanding the information their teachers present in discussions and/or lectures or understanding what they read in their textbooks is usually not enough to enable them to perform well on traditional tests. They must also engage in some activity for the purpose of enabling them to remember what they understand.

B.Activation of Prior Knowledge When students are learning new information, teachers should activate their prior knowledge about the subject being taught. This may be accomplished by asking students two questions. The first is, "What do you know about . . .?" The second is, "What do you want to know about . . .?" Activating prior knowledge about a topic provides students with a "hook" to hang the new information on in their mental memory network.

C.Maintenance Rehearsal Versus Elaborative Rehearsal Maintenance rehearsal, as the term implies, consists of using some memory strategy that keeps or maintains information in short-term memory, but does little to facilitate the transfer of the information from short-term memory to long-term memory. Repeating a telephone number over and over again until it is dialed is an example of maintenance rehearsal. Elaborative rehearsal is a more active process that involves elaborating on the new incoming information in some way. Elaboration may consist of making associations between the new information and what one already knows, creating a mental image of the new information, recoding information in some way such as taking notes on a chapter while reading it, or creating some mnemonic device that helps memory of the information.

D.Elaborative rehearsal is more effective both for transferring information from short-term memory to long-term memory and for storing information in long-term memory. Many students unknowingly use maintenance rehearsal strategies as their primary strategies for learning. For example, when learning vocabulary words, they write the words on one side of index cards and the definitions of the words on the other side of the cards. They then repeat both over and over again. While the act of writing the words and their definitions on index cards is not in itself useless, study should consist of more than reading the two over and over.

E.Multiple Sensory and Multiple Format Instruction For a number of years, teachers have heard the term multisensory instructional methods – using multiple senses (seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting) – when teaching material to students. The use of multisensory instruction continues to be important for enhancing memory and learning for all children. In addition to multisensory teaching methods, information should also be presented in multiple formats, such as in spatial and linear formats. The computer program Inspiration is useful for this purpose. Inspiration enables students to create and modify concept map webs and other graphic organizers. It also enables students to convert the concept maps they have created into traditional linear outlines. Additionally, it helps students prioritize and rearrange ideas to create essays and reports, as well as to organize information from their class notes or textbook chapters. Thus, it provides students with a number of ways to recode information, and this recoding facilitates long-term memory storage and retrieval. F.Interference When storage or consolidation of newly learned material is disrupted by prior learning, the phenomenon is referred to as proactive interference. When subsequent learning disrupts the consolidation of information in memory, the phenomenon is called retroactive interference. During the traditional school day, students are presented with new or partially new information approximately every 45 to 60 minutes. This situation produces fertile ground for proactive and retroactive interference to disrupt the storage of knowledge in long-term memory. If proactive interference occurs, the learning of information presented in the first class will interfere with the learning of information presented in the second class. If retroactive interference occurs, the opposite situation will exist - the learning of information in the second class will interfere with the learning of information in the first class.

G.To reduce interference, block scheduling is a good alternative to traditional scheduling. With block scheduling, students have approximately four 90-minute classes each day. If teachers use the 90 minutes wisely (i.e., they do not simply lecture for 90 minutes instead of 45 minutes), they can provide students with opportunities to engage in activities that will actually enhance the consolidation of the new to-be-learned information in long-term memory. Proactive and retroactive interference also provide rationale for curricula that crosses different disciplines.

H.Episodic and Semantic Memory Systems Episodic memory is the memory system that stores information about the events or episodes in our lives. Semantic memory is the memory of knowledge and concepts. Because individual differences exist in the effectiveness of both of these memory systems, teachers should use multiple, varied activities, such as projects, group work and field trips. Parents should also reinforce learning by exposing children to active learning experiences such as trips and tours.

I.Perceptual and Conceptual Priming Perceptual priming refers to the phenomenon that prior perception of an object leads to easier subsequent perception of the same object. Priming occurs on a conceptual dimension as well. Thus, exposing students to concepts via advance organizers such as introducing vocabulary, objectives and/or questions prior to reading or presentation of new information can facilitate the memory and learning of this information.

J.Encoding and Retrieval Practice Encoding practice for school students generally consists of various ways of inputting to-be-learned information. Specific strategies might include reading and re-reading textbook chapters or lecture notes or more effective strategies such as outlining or mind mapping information presented in the book or during class lectures and/or using some mnemonic strategy such as the method of loci or word substitution method to encode information in long-term memory. Retrieval practice consists of engaging in activities that call for the recall or access of stored information in long-term memory. In some cases retrieval practice may actually be more effective for retention of information than encoding practice. Thus, research supports the notion that activities such as reviews of previously presented information (asking students questions in class, practice tests, studying with other students, parents asking questions about the new information, constructing and completing self-tests, etc.) should enhance memory and learning.

K.Retrieval Cues and the Encoding Specificity Hypothesis A retrieval cue is a stimulus that is stored with the new information. Retrieval cues facilitate the recall or access of the stored information. Retrieval cues must be present when learning takes place in order to be effective in facilitating the recall of information. Retrieval cues may take various forms. They may consist of conceptual categories in which the new information is placed. They may also be visual images or other words that the new information is associated with at the time it is stored in long-term memory. Retrieval cues may consist of prior knowledge that has been activated and used as the "hook" on which to hang new knowledge, or it may be experiential in nature, such as completing a project or going on a field trip. When students are provided with the retrieval cues (e.g., multiple choice tests or tests with word banks), it is easier for them to access information that has been stored in long-term memory.

L.Mnemonic Methods Memorization of facts and knowledge through the use of mnemonic methods may provide the scaffolding for higher order thinking. Mnemonic learning might be especially helpful for storage and retrieval of information in long-term memory when students lack a relevant knowledge base about the topic they are studying. Mnemonics may provide visual imagery or verbal elaborations that serve as cues for recalling information that is low in imagery or in meaningfulness. Students can generate their own mnemonic devices or their teachers can provide them with mnemonic materials.

M.Metamemory Students often need help with identifying their specific individual profiles of memory strengths and weaknesses. For example, children who have problems in the school setting often have a relative weakness in auditory short-term memory and a relative strength in visual short-term memory. This knowledge will help enable them to develop and/or understand the need for strategies to deal with situations that place considerable demands on auditory short-term memory.

drain your valuable energy with complaining and uninspiring attitudes. By developing

relationships with those committed to constant improvement and the pursuit of the best

that life has to offer, you will have plenty of company on your path to the top of whatever

mountain you seek to climb.

The Central Board of Secondary Education CBSE moves a step ahead of academics to work on the aptitude of its students. In a pilot project, the CBSE has initiated a Global Aptitude Test for students of standard 10.
Unlike the other developed countries where aptitude plays a prominent role in shaping on is career, the Indian students are tested on aptitude at a much later stage. To help its students pick up the right career path, the CBSE has launched this program. About 90 affiliated schools across the country are to conduct the test this year.
In the Indian education system, the aptitude of any student is assessed when the student faces an entrance for taking up a professional course. Experts, however, feel that the aptitude of the students should be judged at the school level which would then help choose the right career path.
If the subjects are taught vis-à-vis aptitude, we will avoid wastage of human resources, said the CBSE spokesperson Rama Sharma.
Explaining further Sharma said, Most of the times, the students are not aware about their own aptitude levels. They opt for disciplines which they are actually not meant for. Many students who opt for sciences at the higher secondary level give it up and pick up humanities or commerce at the under graduate level.
Rama further said that if the students are aware of their aptitude at the secondary level itself, they will be able to make the right move in the career.
The Global Aptitude Test has been started as a pilot project and the CBSE feels that it is still testing the waters. This is the second year when the students will take the test. This test is optional for the schools to adopt. The board feels that to begin with, it is important to convince the parents and the students about the importance of knowing one is own aptitude.
The challenge here is to bring the teacher students and the parents all on one broad dialogue. In the present scenario, a normal Indian parent does not understand the importance of aptitude and reasoning, said Sharma. Sharma also felt that it is time that people start discussing aptitude and understand its importance in framing the career path of the students.
About 10,000 students across 90 CBSE schools, including both Government and public, will take the test this year in February. The Psychometric Aptitude test has been designed and customised for the Class 10 students of the CBSE. The board will also initiate an aptitude training program for the teachers of its affiliated schools to help teachers get a better understanding before they train their students in the same.

A.try to change yourself for 30 days.  IN THIS periods work under the principle that by committing to a change for a month, it will become a habit. Since it is study techniques you want to reinforce, pick one or two habits and work on them for an entire month.

 
B. Spend your time learning things as they come up in your courses. Attend classes with the perspective that you could be tested at any moment. It should only be material that you were just presented that you might not have had time to fully learn. Waiting before tests, assignments or finals is taking things too far.

C. Wake up a half hour earlier and spend that time reading from your textbook. If you’ve already read the chapters, spend the time rewriting the key concepts into a notebook. A half-hour out of your day in the morning probably won’t create a huge impact on your schedule, yet over the entire term it can be invaluable in boosting your understanding.

 
D. Spend some time each week looking for practical ways you can use the information you are learning. If you can find situations from your daily life that are similar to your subjects, they can go from abstract theories to concrete tools.


E.Background Reading. Invest some of your time each week in reading the background of the ideas surrounding your subjects. Pick out interesting topics in the news or books that make use of ideas from your field of study. Background reading can reinforce the ideas by connecting them with reality.

F.Set Daily Study Times. Set periods of time that you will spend studying each day. Once you spend a month reinforcing these learning periods, it will become automatic. Regular studying times prevent the need for cramming and can give you consistency in your schedule.

G. I’ve had classes where I received an A+, yet I attended less than a third of the lectures. I have had courses where I didn’t buy or read the textbook. Talk to other classmates about how the course is graded (mostly textbook, mostly lectures, etc.) and use that as a basis for deciding where to cut time if you have to. Skipping a class can be a good strategy if it means you could better learn the subject on your own.


 

H. A good editing habit when checking over your essays and assignments is to read them upside down. This prevents you from speed reading the page and missing grammatical or sentence structure errors. This also gives you a better feeling of how an essay might be read through fresh eyes, letting you improve your style. 

I.Schedule a Balance. Compress your work and studying into the weekdays and mornings so you don’t need to work all of the time. Good habits also involve taking time for rest as well.

Revision related tips
About 20 days before the entrance exam, start getting acquainted with a wide variety of topics to improve the range of numericals you can attempt. Do not attempt lengthy questions, and focus instead on objective, numerical questions to practice as many types of questions as you can. You should look at breadth rather than depth in these 20 days. 
Revise all important concepts and formulae, so that they are on your tips and come to you without any effort or thought. 
engineering entrance gives equal weightage to all three subjects – and so should your screening preparation. 
Remember - engineering entrance has negative marking for wrong answers. So your familiarity with concepts will be crucial if you take the calculated risk of logical guessing. 
Things to keep in mind one day before the examination:
You need at least 6-8 hours of sleep before the examination to keep yourself fresh while solving questions. 
Eat a light meal so that you do not feel drowsy or lethargic during the paper. 
Revise only those topics that you have studied earlier. Do not start reading any new topics just before the examination, since this will be a waste of time and you may lose the information you have already grasped. 
You should reach the test center at least half an hour before the exam and if you haven't seen the center before, then you must go and visit the center on the day before the exam. 
Note: If your examination center is in another city- 
Reach the city positively on the day before the exam. 
Ensure the place of your stay there is calm, clean and conducive to study. 
In actuality it does not make any difference whether the center is in your city or in some other city. So get the fear of an unknown city out of your mind. 
Never go to the center on an empty stomach. Always keep biscuits, fruits etc. handy. 
Some students complain of nausea or headache close to the test. So keep relevant medicine handy. 
If you plan to ride your own vehicle to the center, ensure it is in proper running condition and has enough fuel in its tank. 
If you do not have a vehicle, ensure a means of traveling that reaches you to the center well in time, and give at least half an hour of time for unforeseen delays like traffic jams and rush hour traffic. 
Keep a wristwatch, your permission letter, a pen, two pencils (sharpened at both ends), an eraser, a sharpener and other relevant stationary systematically with you. 
Some important points to keep in mind during the examination

Synchronize your wristwatch with the center clock. 
Open your permission letter and keep it on your table. 
Do not use a red pen. 
Points regarding presentation
Start attempting the question paper only after reading the instructions given on it very carefully. 
While attempting questions, go on segregating them by the A, B, C method A :These questions are from topics that you have prepared well, and you can clearly comprehend the meaning of these questions. You have done questions containing similar concept earlier and you are confident that you will be able to solve these. B :You know you can solve these questions but they are time-consuming, nevertheless you are confident you will be able to crack them when you come back to them. These questions should be attempted in the second round of question attempting, i.e. when you have solved all questions marked with a B. C :You don't know head or tail of these questions and you should not waste time attempting them. 
Attempting to solve all questions in haste increases the chances of error. It is better to solve slightly fewer questions faultlessly. 
Never attempt two questions at the same time. Concentrate on one question at a time. 
Carry out all rough work only in the space given in the paper. 
If you need a diagram to understand questions in say physics or coordinate geometry etc., do make one. 
Use the value of constants given in the paper in solving a numerical. If the value is not mentioned, use the one you remember. 
Give all three subjects equal time - i.e. 50 minutes each for physics, chemistry and mathematics. 
While attempting the answers, do not shade the answer key immediately. Instead, tick your response with a pencil 4 on the answer key. 
Keep marking questions with A, B, C in the first round of solving the paper. All questions should be segregated into one of these three categories. This saves valuable time later. 
Fill out the answer key 30 minutes before final time. Fill out the responses to questions attempted after this directly in the answer key

IIT Kharagpur has suspended registrar D. Gunasekaran for allegedly approving payments for a course (in violation of his financial powers) three years ago. The tech school’s board of governors approved the suspension last month after the CBI recommended regular departmental action for major penalty against him. The registrar was issued suspension orders on Wednesday.

Sources said Gunasekaran allegedly cleared an honorarium of Rs 2.1 lakh towards classes and consultation charges of some faculty members and other staff holding a self-financing course at the school. A CBI inquiry was ordered on a complaint made to the government.

After the CBI submitted its report, the school set up a one-man committee of Justice (retd) Ronojit Mitra to probe administrative lapses and recommend against the registrar and other officials.

 The new single Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) being proposed for admission to Indian Institutes Technology/National Institutes of Technology/Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research/Indian Institutes of Information Technology and state government-run engineering colleges would not have a uniform weightage to class XII results. 

 
Sources said while there would be a single-test, class XII weightage would have variations that would cater to needs of different engineering colleges and state governments. For instance, the source said, (Weightage given to class XII result would be different for admission to IIT and different for other engineering colleges. Weightage would be even state-specific. There would be a band of weightage that institutes and state governments would be free to choose from.)
 
The source said variation has been devised to deal with concerns of the state governments many of whom felt that due to different system of evaluation in each state students from low-scoring states should not be discriminated. He gave the example of Tamil Nadu, where admission to state-government run engineering colleges is on the basis of class XII marks and not any entrance test.(For states like Tamil Nadu, weightage for class XII has to be different from what it would be in Bihar or Uttar Pradesh,) the source said. 
 
The T Ramasami committee, which is working on new single JEE, has not made public findings of analysis of past data of school boards that was done by Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) last year. ISI report accessed by TOI shows that this report was not even made part of any presentation. The report, while analyzing data of CBSE, ICSE, Tamil Nadu board and West Bengal board, found that class XII scores from these boards are not comparable. It said, (Since the subject scores do not appear to be comparable, the question of combining them for comparability of aggregate scores across the boards does not arise.)
 
Sources said that all attempt is being made to evolve consensus and a meeting of state education ministers has been called later this month. In case, state governments do not come on board, the ministry is planning to go ahead with a single entrance test for Central government-run engineering institutions from 2014. 
 
Dissent from even one state government would mean that single test for all engineering institutions, public and private, would come to a cropper.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal was hinting for a national level common engineering entrance test from 2013. The idea is to include all engineering colleges under the common entrance test (including IITs and NITs); but for now it looks like only NITs, IITs & IIITs might be included in the first year of the test launch. (via) However the possibility of including other engineering colleges cannot be overlooked according to Sibal, the HRD Minister is set to meet officials from different States to draft a way forward.

The concept of a common engineering entrance test came from T Ramasami committee and was accepted by IIT council & NIT Council; later on IIITs have joined the party. Which means 16 IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), 30 NITs (National Institutes of Technology), 4 IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology), IISERs (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research) and a few deemed universities have only accepted for a common engineering entrance test so far.

AIEEE is conducted every year by CBSE close to 1200,000 students appear for AIEEE and is Indias most popular engineering entrance exam. JEE is conducted by IITs on rotation basis and is administered for approximately 500,000 students, JEE is termed as the toughest engineering entrance exam in India. Clubbing AIEEE & JEE might need long thinking as these two entrance exams vary in the level of difficulty.

Controversy surrounded when the Government made signals to revamp selection process at IITs on the grounds of declining quality from the students. Few alumni did not like the idea of making any changes to the selection process at IITs and started protest on Facebook. The new version clubbed after AIEEE & IITJEE is yet to have a name, any suggestions?
