Krishnamurthy Rengarajan, IIT-B gold medallist.

Knowledge is indeed wealth. Who better exemplifies it than Krishnamurthy Rengarajan, IIT-B gold medallist (B Tech dual-degree course). Krishnamurthy's story is that of hard work, sheer grit and determination.
His undying passion for learning and excellence has paid off. Coming from a lower middle class background , Krishnamurthy has made his parents proud when he passed with flying colours.
His father, who works as a typist at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is overwhelmed by his son's achievement. Rengarajan, who hails from Tamil Nadu, came to Mumbai 28 years ago and settled down in a distant Mumbai suburb of Dombivli. Though the family went through a lot of hardships initially, he made sure that his children were well educated.
"My son always wanted to join the IIT. When people asked him what if you don't get through the entrance examinations, he used to say, `there is no question of me not clearing the test,'" says his proud father.
And, of course, he did top all the five years at IIT, a result of sheer hard work and brilliance, says his mother, barely able to control her excitement. "I am very happy for him," says Radha Rengarajan. Krishnamurthy did his schooling at the Kidland School in Dombivli and pre-degree from V G Vaze College at Mulund. His favourite subject being mathematics it was obvious that he would pursue a degree in engineering.
He won the Rakesh Mathur award of Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100,000) during his third year and other scholarships throughout the four years.
Here's what Krishnamurthy had to say on his IIT experience.

My IIT experience

The five years I spent at IIT were the best in my life. I will cherish each and every moment here. I loved everything here: the professors are the best one can ever get, the facilities to study and the extra-curricular activities are excellent. I made best of friends and thoroughly enjoyed my college life.
I don't think I will ever get this experience anywhere else.

On studies

Before joining IIT, I used to study for 7 to 8 hours daily. After joining IIT, I used to spend about a couple of hours. I did not go for anything coaching classes. I learnt through Brilliant Tutorial correspondence course and my preparation began after I finished my 10th standard.

Why IIT

IIT is one of the premier institutes in India. I always wanted to get good higher education, so I opted for IIT.

My mantra for success

There is no short cut to success. One has to work very hard, put in a lot of effort, should have a problem-solving mentality and a right approach to every problem.
My parents always stood by me, their support has been invaluable and am overwhelmed.

Advice to IIT aspirants

Work hard. You have to spend a lot of time preparing as exams are getting more and more competitive. You must also have problem-solving skills.

Interests

Solving math puzzles, reading books. I used to play cricket, but now I don't get the time.

Next move

Money is the least important thing for Krishnamurthy. So no jobs for the time being. "I have been selected for the scholarship programme at Stanford University for a PhD in operations research. I would like to research on optimising computer networks and operation systems. Quality research is available abroad. After the PhD programme I would like to join any academia of good repute and continue my research activities. Among corporates, I admire Google. It is the one company that reflects perfection, hard work and efficiency."

Will you come back to India?

Of course, I will. The brain drain phenomenon is dying out. It's the time for reverse brain drain!

The Window" (Author unknown)

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man  was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to drain the fluids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and   families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military  service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the  man in the bed next to the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.
The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods where  his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and  color of the outside world. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake, the man had said. Ducks and swans played on the water while  children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm amid flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite  detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.
One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by.  Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive  words. Unexpectedly, an alien thought entered his head: Why should hehave all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see  anything? It didn't seem fair. As the thought fermented, the man felt  ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy eroded into resentment and soon turned him sour. He   began to brood and found himself unable to sleep. He should be by that  window - and that thought now controlled his life.
Late one night, as he lay staring at the ceiling, the man by the window  began to cough. He was choking on the fluid in his lungs. The other man   watched in the dimly lit room as the struggling man by the window groped for the button to call for help. Listening from across the room, he never moved, never pushed his own button which would have brought the nurse running. In less than five minutes, the coughing and choking  stopped, along with the sound of breathing. Now, there was only silence--deathly silence.
The following morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths. When she found the lifeless body of the man by the window, she was saddened and called the hospital attendant to take it away--no  words, no fuss. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the man asked if he  could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.
Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his   first look. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it all himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.
Moral of the story:
The pursuit of happiness is a matter of choice...it is a positive attitude we consciously choose to express. It is not a gift that gets delivered to our doorstep each morning, nor does it come through the window. And I am certain that our circumstances are just a small part of what makes us joyful. If we wait for them to get just right, we will never find lasting joy.
The pursuit of happiness is an inward journey. Our minds are like   programs, awaiting the code that will determine behaviors; like bank vaults awaiting our deposits. If we regularly deposit positive, encouraging, and uplifting thoughts, if we continue to bite our lips  just before we begin to grumble and complain, if we shoot down that seemingly harmless negative thought as it germinates, we will find that there is much to rejoice about.

     SRIKANTH JAGABATHULA,President of india gold medal winner

Meet Srikanth Jagbathula,IIT's pride,the president of india gold medal winner for 2005-2006 for scoring highest number of marks among all branches at IIT-Bombay.

After the inevitable stint at IIT,Srikanth is all set to fly to USA for studies at the prestigious MIT.After 5 years he plans to comeback to india and start his own communication company here.

As a kid he dreamt of being an engineer.Somehow he always thought that a engineer's job would be fascinating.He heard about the IIT in his 7th class.Since then he made it his aim.After passing out 10th he prepaired for IIT day and night and easily got into it with an All india rank of 38.Srikanth who hails from Hyderabad was a born topper.His favourite subjects where maths and physics but dreaded in biology and chemistry.A desire to top in every aspect of life made him successful and live up to his parent's expectations.

Any IITians in his family?"NO" is his reply.My father has retired from the technical education department in A.P and my mother is a homemeker.They are really very happy for me but sad as i have to go abroad for further studies.
His role models: Apple computer founder Steve Jobs,Google founders Serjey Brin and Larry Page,Infosys founder Narayan Murthy and Nandan Nilekani.

My IIT Experience :
"IIT has been a dream come true for me.Initially it was very difficult for me as i come from Hyderabad and Mumbai was a new city for me.But from the second year every thing was smooth as i made a lot of friends."

My Mantra for Success:
"I ahve a desire to excel.I'am very organised,am always on time and I have a deisre to learn the subject.I have always done things that i have liked to do which is very important."

Advice to IIT Aspirants:
"Don't get bogged down by pressure,many people are very talented but it is important to perform on the entrance day.You must prepair hard for two years and learn to takcle the pressure."

In Iodic acid,Iodine's oxidation number is +5 so in a rxn it will get reduce itself rather than getting oxidised.It is used in the Iodination rxn to remove the HI formed by oxidising it and getting reduced inorder to prevent the backward rxn of the Iodination.So answer is 'C'

I think the most reactive nucleophile among the two is:
(CH3)2CHO-
It is so because there are more +I groups present on it which increases the charge on the carbanion and decreases its stability.It is also due to the steric effect of these groups being more than the other carbocation,which makes it less stable.Less stability means more Reactivity.So (CH3)2CHO- is more reactive and less stable than CH3O-

The answer is HNO2 + HNO3.

(2)NO2 + (1)H2O = (1)HNO2 + (1)HNO3

The answer is for any value of theta.Let us consider the incident ray makes an angle of theta with the normal to the horizontal surface.Therefore it makes an angle of 90-(theta) with the horizontal.This ray gets reflected and now is incident on the vertical mirror.By geometry we can say that the angle of incidence to this surface from the normal is 90-(theta) [ just draw the figure to understand better and apply simple geometry ].As this normal is parallel to the horizontal surface and makes the same angle i.e 90-(theta).So for any angle this ray emerges always parallel to the incident ray for any value of theta.

carbocation rearragement is mostly for the stabilization of the transition state of carbocation formed as the intermediate in the rxn.As we know that the order of stability is : 3 degree>2 degree>1 degree.It usually happens in uni molecular reactions where a much stable cation is formed.The other case where it happens is thermal heating due to the breaking of the bonds and formation of new bonds,but this case is rarely seen.

Just use the mirror formula for this.

Case 1:
f= +20
u= +10
The sign convention here used is that the direction in which the incident ray travels is positive.

1/u + 1/v = 1/f
By this formula we get v= -20.

Case 2:
Apply the same mirror frmula again
f= +20
u= +30
We get, v= +60.

Magnification in is given by m=-v/u.

Case 1: m= +2.Therefore since the magnification is +ve, for a virtual object we get a real image.

Case 2: m= -6.Therefore since the magnification is -ve,for a virtual object we get a virtual image.

TMH is the best.no competition for it considering IIT-JEE.It has got quite a number of solved and unsolved problems of higher level.But first practice ur boards maths then start TMH.In this way u'll be comfortable with its level.and always solve a few solved examples and then go to the unsolved.
