Change in potential energy is negative of work done by the conservative force. In case of attractive force work done by the force is positive when we bring a body closer to the body exerting the attractive force(because force and displacement are parallel) and hence change in potential energy is negative. If initial PE is assigned zero reference value then final PE becomes negative.

For Theory its sufficient in fact do not read anything other than this. for prob practice you can do from HC Verma, D. C. Pandey Locus MAterial etc.
