Refer the figure..
The smaller block has a mass of 5kg and the wedge a mass of 30kg.
The angle made by the wedge with the smooth horizontal floor is 300.
The horizontal length of the wedge is 0.5m
Friction is negligible on all surfaces

Neglect the size of smaller block

Determine the distance the wedge moves when the smaller block moves to the bottom of the plane....

A man swimming in a stream of velocity ' v ' suddenly finds himself to be at a distance ' d ' from the from a fall of water ahead. If ' c ' be the distance of the nearest shore. Show that to save himself, the man must swim with a velocity no less than

The volume of a glass vessel is 1000 cc at 200C. What volume of mercury should be poured into it at this temperature so that the volume of the remaining space does not change with temperature? Co effecients of cubical expansion:
Glass = 9 x 10-6K-1
Mercury = 1.8 x 10-4K-1

A glass tube filled with Mercury is attached to the bottom of an iron pendulum rod of length 100 cm. How high must the Mercury be filled in the glass tube so that the centre of mass of this pendulum will not rise or fall with changes in temperature? Linear expansion coefficient of Iron = 11 x 106 K-1 and cubical expansion of coefficent of Mercury = 18.2 x 106 K-1

In the given diagram the two strings are moving downward with velocity v and the velocity of the mass M are to be found out.....in terms of v and  only..the two pulleys are fixed..
options
(a) 2vcos
(b) v/cos
(c) 2v/cos
(d) vcos

mostly there is a difference in tensions only when there is a movable pulley..this resuts in one tension being twice of the other.....for fixed pulley, tension is alwaysl equal on both sides of the pulley provided that the string is massless and inextensible....
