Once, Newton came to India and watched a few Tamil movies that had his head spinning. He was convinced that all his logic and laws in physics were just a huge pile of junk and apologized for everything he had done.

In the movie of Rajanikanth, Newton was confused to such an extent that he went paranoid.

Here are a few scenes

1) Rajanikanth has a Brain Tumor which, according to the doctors can't be cured and his death is imminent. In one of the fights, our great Rajanikanth is shot in the head. To everybody's surprise, the bullet passes through his ears taking away the tumor along with it and he is cured! Long Live Rajanikanth!

2) In another movie, Rajanikanth is confronted with 3 gangsters. Rajanikanth has a gun but unfortunately only one bullet and a knife. Guess, what he does? He throws the knife at the middle gangster? & shoots the bullet towards the knife. The knife cuts the bullet into 2 pieces, which kills both the gangsters on each side of the middle gangster & the knife kills the middle one.

3) Rajanikanth is chased by a gangster. Rajanikanth has a revolver but no bullets in it. Guess, what he does. Nah? not even in your remotest imaginations. He waits for the gangster to shoot. As soon as the gangster shoots, Rajanikanth opens the bullet compartment of his revolver and catches the bullet. Then, he closes the bullet compartment and fires his gun. Bang... the gangster dies...

This was too much for our Newton to take! He was completely shaken and decided to go back. But he happened to see another movie for one last time, and thought that at least one movie would follow his theory of physics. The whole movie goes fine and Newton is happy that all in the world hasn't changed. Oops, not so fast!

The 'climax' finally arrives. Rajanikanth gets to know that the villain is on the other side of a very high wall. So high that Rajanikanth can't jump even if he tries like one of those superman techniques that our heroes normally use. Rajanikanth has to desperately kill the villain because it's the climax. (Newton dada is smiling since it is virtually impossible?) Rajanikanth suddenly pulls two guns from his pockets. He throws one gun in the air and when the gun has reached above the height of the wall, he uses the second gun and shoots at the trigger of the first gun in air. The first gun fires off and the villain is dead.

Success And Failure

Many times we become very disheartened when our efforts in studying do not pay off.

We slowly move to the path of failure -

- there is no interest in study

- concentration while studying is less

- If concentration is good, power to recall the points is low

- If recall power is there, memory fails us during examinations

- Memory may fail us during the exams but on leaving the hall, we remember all the points.

Many of us can identify with the above characteristics. We all have the ability to do well in our studies, but lack of concentration power, will-power and outside influences (studying and TV at the same time, eating and studying simultaneously etc.) are draining our mental energy. We need to have fixed timings for everything. If we overload the mind, we cannot expect it to work to our advantage.

Preparing For Study

A system known as Intelligence Growth Graph has been created to ease the difficulty behind studying. The mantra of this system is mind + technique. Before studying, the atmosphere should be pleasant, quiet, clean, with sufficient light and air. All the books needed for studying should be ready in front of you and you should mentally prepare your mind - for the next 45 minutes, I am going to really focus on my work; I want to study.

This is very important because once the mind is stable, focused, under control, it will grasp all the information you give it.

Before entering the actual study part, we will focus on the external factors, such as diet and its effect on the brain, the ideal time for studying, enhancing the memory, posture while studying etc.

Diet, Study & Brain

Good health leads to better memory power. As we all know, whatever we eat is transformed into blood and energy. Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients directly affects the brain's efficiency. Sprouted grains, fruits like apples and guava are beneficial to students. They help in blood circulation and brain refreshment.

Beverage like tea and coffee should be avoided but if you are used to such drinks, restrict it to one cup during daytime. If more then 6 cups are consumed per day, your sleep may get disturbed.

Ideal Time To Study - The book, 'Clock of Living Nature' states than early hours, 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. is when the human body is at its weakest. Similarly, close to 2:00 p.m. is not a good time since the physical and mental energy have been used during the morning hours. '

8:00 a.m. - noon and 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. are two good time frames for studying. This is not a biological fact; people can program their mind to study at anytime and also change their body mechanisms. But generally, the morning hours are best suited for studying and learning.

If possible, attention should be given to studying a particular subject at a particular place and time. This helps in developing conditioned reflexes. It has been psychologically proven that we study or recall things depending on where we were at the time and try to picturise the scene again. When we are in the examination hall and are trying to remember points, we often try to recall the page and if there were pictures or tables on it etc. This is why, we highlight certain points or annotate as we study.

Memory And The Brain

Anything not used is bound to perish; this is applicable to the brain and memory. We all have experienced that

- things seen often are remembered better

- reading aloud helps in memorizing a particular section (we often forget a person's name because we do not pronounce the name, at the time of introductions)

The brain has numerous compartments to store information. A person's will, liking for a subject, healthy body and mind, all contribute to the development a good memory. The aim behind studying is also essential. If you are only interested in passing your exams, you are sure to forget the portion once the exams are over.

Yoga and Meditation help increase one's concentration power. Nobel Laureate, Roger Sperry has said that the left part of the brain stores words, numbers, concepts etc. while the right side stores shapes, graphs, sounds, smells and emotions. If you good at recalling diagrams, but not the writing around the diagram, you are not making use of both sides of the brain. Focus should be placed on developing both right and left side.

Posture While Studying

Most of us do not appreciate our mothers telling us to sit straight, stop lolling around etc., but there is a scientific explanation behind our sitting position. The book, 'Work and the Brain,' talks about how energy is wasted if a wrong position is adopted. If you do not sit properly, the tension on the chest increases and the lungs are not activated properly. Bad posture leads to less oxygen reaching the lungs and obstacles in abdominal and pelvic blood flow.

It is advisable to change your position two-three times while studying. Stretch your legs at regular intervals and practice breathing in through your nostrils (for a few seconds) and pumping air out slowly.

The power of concentration is a skill that is easy to master, that is if you have the willpower to do so.

The following are helpful tips to improve your ability to concentrate in the best way possible. These suggestions apply whether you are in the office busy with work, school, business meeting, or if you are trying to finish a particular project.

#Do five more:

There are actually two types of persons in the world: those who know how to go through in eliminating frustration and those who wish they are able to work through it. Focus and concentrate in doing just five more things. This sort of mantra is best said when you feel like giving up.

For instance, if you feel like you no longer want to read or write any more pages, tell yourself to do just five pages more. Finish just five more math questions. Stay five minutes more on the treadmill. Take note that athletes build their own physical prowess by pushing their bodies to the point of exhaustion while they develop mental stamina.

#Take one step at one time

There are instances when you feel like your mind is loaded with many ideas like that of a scatterbrain. The key is to control your brain. Rather worrying on many matters, prioritize tasks and do only those that are needed.

#Train yourself to have tunnel vision

You could actually cup your hands around your own eyes. This could serve as a trigger to tell your mind to focus on a particular responsibility. For example, you are in a room and you need to study but there are many things prevent you from concentrating. Cupping your own hands around your own eyes could help your brain to switch to focus mode and keep it on its track.

10 SMALL TIPS TO CRACK AN EXAMINATION

* First and most important is to have confidence in yourself.Don’t lose that confidence while preparing for the entrance exams even if you are not doing well in the coaching classes.

* Having mentioned about coaching classes,I would say they play an important role in helping you crack the exam. The simple reason being continued guidance throughout the year and perpetual tests that keep you in touch with course all the time.Hence it is important to be regular in them to be able to achieve good results in the end.

* At home prepare a time table and follow it strictly.Don’t ignore it.

* Don’t get too involved with only engineering books and refer to NCERT books too. With the new IIT pattern, a lot of questions are directly made from there which you might have already seen yourself by analyzing this year’s paper.

* Don’t waste time and don’t stress yourself.Study in a balanced way and maintain a good friend circle who will guide you when you face doubts and also boost your morale.

* This one is for toppers!Don’t get complacent. Many good rankers in coaching institutes get complacent if they good marks which in is bad in the long run as they lose out to lower rankers in the end.I have seen many cases.

* To crack big papers it is very very important to be able to solve the paper completely. You might know all the questions but not been able to solve them is equivalent to not knowing them.So the golden rule is practice a lot of sample papers and in the exams not to waste time on a single question.

* Stay away from computers as much as possible! This is a major distraction from students from towns and cities as you don’t get to know how quickly time is slipping out of your hands along with straining your eyes and body which makes you dizzy and you are off to sleep!

* Choosing the right books for entrance exams is very important.Consult IITians and your teachers about them to make sure that you get your hands on the right ones and don’t waste your time in trying out new books every time.

* Last but very important point is not to get nervous while going for the exam. This will get your hands and brain move faster, quicker and better than those who are nervous!

These 10 are my golden rules which if followed strictly will definitely help you crack the paper and you will emerge out with flying colors!!
